Hornet Nation at Work The Story

In June of 2002, Sector Management was looking for a way to show the company's appreciation to all the employees and to continue the tradition of making Northrop Grumman a good place to work. The idea was to create an event that would include free food, music and an employee car show at the West Complex. The food service and the car show could be done, but could a band be hired or formed? Janet Lund, Director of HR at the time, contacted John Gilpin, knowing he was a musician, to see if he knew of other employees who were musicians and would be willing to play at the event. John in turn contacted musicians he knew here at NGC and the first band lineup was formed and Hornet Nation was born. Auditions were held in the 902 North Cafeteria, two rehearsals were completed and the group went out and played under the name of "The Hornets". We decided to name ourselves after the F/A-18 Hornet because most of us at the time were involved on the program and eventually we changed the name to "Hornet Nation". Interestingly, the band started practicing in the North Cafeteria in the 902 building after work back in 2002 and still practices there today. The concept is great – a band of employees showcasing their talents and performing for other employees for their enjoyment while supporting the company. Even though this could have ended with that first Employee Appreciation event, Hornet Nation has continued forward and expanded our sights beyond the El Segundo site. The driving goal of the Hornet Nation band has always been to work as a team to create a better community within Northrop Grumman and a be a forerunner in Employee Engagement. Since its inception, Hornet Nation has supported company events including the Centennial of Flight (2003), the NGRC Fun(d) Raising Festivals (2004 – 2012), Who's Your Cupid (2005 – 2006), the LCROSS Moon Landing Ceremony (2009), Open House events in El Segundo, Redondo Beach and Palmdale, the B-2 Anniversary Celebration (2009), the Employee Appreciation Day events (2005 – Present), Connect1 Events and recently the Aerospace Sector's President's Award Dinner. Hornet Nation was also recognized by Sector Executive Management in 2012 for our 10 years of outstanding service. Hornet Nation has also reached outside of our company facilities. Over the past 12 years the band has performed at fundraising events for the LA Heart Walk/March of Dimes (10 years!), the Arthritis Foundation and USO events such as the "Battle of the Bands" at St. Rocke in Hermosa Beach where NGC has the winning record against Boeing, raising over $7000.00 in the last three years. We have had great support all these years from HR, Corporate and Executive Management and we would like to give a shout out to Darryl Heath, Lu de le Fortrie, Keith Burton, Katherine Reed and Henrine Love from HR, Laura Kirkpatrick from Community Relations and Corey Moore, Tommy Tomlinson, Frank Flores, Lisa Kohl and Tom Vice from Sector Management. The original line up has changed since the first show in 2002 but our goal has remained steady and we will continue to make music for the employees of Northrop Grumman and company supported charities as long as we are able and entertain the employees of our great company for many more years to come.
